On This Day – 23rd March

It was on this day in 2005 that Umbro unveiled England’s new home shirt, that would be used in the following year’s World Cup in Germany.

The previous shirt that was produced for fans was reversible. On the inside was a blue and white ‘leisurewear’ shirt that could be worn as well as the shirt worn by the players during matches. This new design did not feature and also had a few alterations to the previous design.

The new design had no collar like the previous one, opting instead for a tight v-neck. A thin red cross ran over the right shoulder and down part of the chest. Other than that, the rest of the body was plain white. It was a simple, stylish design and was popular with the fans.

England wore the shirt in four of their five matches in Germany. It was worn in the first two group matches against Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago as well as the knockout matches against Ecuador and Portugal. The red away shirt was worn in the third and final group game against Sweden.
