A blog about all things football

On This Day – 22nd March

Apologies that this is a day late. I thought that I’d do the article anyway as it is important to do one for every day.

Bill Shankly became Carlisle United manager on this day in 1949. It was his first job in football management, a career that lasted fifteen years and saw him becoming one of the best managers in the world.

United were languishing in the bottom half of the Third Division when Shankly took charge. He knew his way around Brunton Park, having played there during the 1932-33 season.
Shankly spent two years at Carlisle, changing the club’s fortunes in the short time at the club. They finished 15th at the end of the 1948/49 season before finishing ninth and third in his two full seasons.

The Scot moved to Grimsby Town, then Workington and Huddersfield Town before landing the Liverpool job in 1959 It was here that he made a real name for himself, winning the Second Division and three First Division titles. His Liverpool side also won two FA Cups in 1965 and 1974 as well as the UEFA Cup in 1973.
