On This Day – 8th February
A rampant Liverpool hit five goals past league-leaders Arsenal on this day back in 2014.
Brendan Rodgers side were 4-0 up after only 20 minutes giving Arsenal a real shock.
Liverpool’s first goal of the afternoon came from defender Martin Skrtel after less than a minute on the clock. The Czech defender hammered in from close range from a Steven Gerrard free-kick.
Skrtel added a second goal from yet another set-piece after ten minutes, powering in a header from ten yards from a corner. Steven Gerrard provided the assist yet again.
Over the next few minutes, Liverpool laid siege on the Arsenal goal and had several chances to score. Finally Raheem Sterling was able to grab their third goal, latching on to a low cross from Luis Suarez to tap in at the far post.
Liverpool were rampant and showed no signs of letting up. Daniel Sturridge added a fourth when he ran through and fired low past Wojciech Szczesny in the 20th minute.
Arsenal were given some respite until half-time, but seven minutes into the second half the home side struck again through Raheem Sterling.
Liverpool were now attacking their famous Kop End and Sterling broke free of the Arsenal defence and scored his second and Liverpool’s fifth at the second attempt.
Current Arsenal manager Mikkel Arteta converted a penalty kick after 69 minutes, but it was nothing more than a consolation goal. The visitors were absolutely played off the park and Liverpool were devastating!
Chelsea took over at the top with a win over Newcastle later in the day with a 3-0 win at home over Newcastle United. However, it was Manchester City who ended the season as champions, beating Liverpool to the title by two points when it looked all but certain that the title was going to Merseyside.
