On This Day – 4th February
It was on this day in 2006 that Alan Shearer became the record goalscorer for his hometown club Newcastle United.
Shearer’s goal came at St James’s Park in a win over Portsmouth and was scored at the Gallowgate End, Newcastle’s famous home end.
In all, Alan Shearer scored an impressive 206 goals during his ten years at the club. He would have scored more, but had a torrid 1997/98 season, when he only scored twice in 17 Premier League matches after recovering from an ankle injury.
Shearer was one of the best strikers in the Premier League. His record at Blackburn Rovers, the club that Newcastle signed him from, was also as impressive with 130 goals in just 171 games.
Three years after retiring from the game, Shearer returned to Newcastle United as caretaker-manager. He was unable to save them from relegation and only recorded one victory in the club’s final eight matches of the season.
A statue was made in Shearer’s honour and now stands outside St James’s Park. It was unveiled in September 2016.
