On This Day – 2nd February
It was on this day in 1991 that Arsenal lost their only league match of 1990/91 season. They would go on and lift the league championship, their second title in three years.
Chelsea beat the league leaders 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, with all of the goals coming in the second half. Graham Stuart and Kerry Dixon out Chelsea two goals ahead before Alan Smith scored late on.
Arsenal’s regular centre back Steve Bould was injured and was replaced by Andy Linighan. Some Arsenal fans claim that if Bould was fit and able to play, they wouldn’t have slipped up!
Thirteen years later, Arsene Wenger would go one better and guided his Arsenal team to a complete season unbeaten. They would go 49 matches unbeaten before losing to Manchester United in October 2004.
