On This Day – 22nd February
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish sensationally quit the Anfield club on this day back in 1991, much to the shock of the footballing world.
Dalglish had joined the club as a player in 1977, signing from Celtic for a British record £440,000. He was brought in to replace Kevin Keegan, who had decided to join German side Hamburg.
When Joe Fagan decided to retire as Liverpool manager in 1985, Dalglish stepped up to become player/manager. He had an incredible first season in charge as Liverpool won the League and FA Cup double with ease.
Dalglish would oversee another two league championships and an FA Cup win before leaving his beloved Liverpool.
The Hillsborough Disaster at the 1989 FA Cup Semi Final in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives, would affect the Scotsman greatly and was one of the reasons behind his departure from the club in February 1991. Dalglish decided that his time at Anfield would come to an end after a thrilling 4-4 draw with rivals Everton in the FA Cup fifth round and with Liverpool sat at the top of the First Division.
In April 2009, Dalglish returned to the club as manager for a second time. He stayed at Anfield for three years and lifted the League Cup in 2012, the club’s first trophy in six years.
