On This Day – 19th February
It was a real day to forget for Manchester United on this day in 1972, as they lost 5-1 away to bitter rivals Leeds United in the First Division.
Manchester United were in a poor run of form, having lost the last five league games. They still had the majority of the team who had won the European Cup four years earlier, but they were struggling under ne manager Frank O’Farrell.
Leeds were exactly the opposite. Their manager Don Revie was turning the club into one of the best teams in the country. They had come close to winning the league title the previous season and were on the way to winning first FA Cup.
Mick Jones gave Manchester United a torrid afternoon and helped himself to a hat-trick. Allan Clarke and Peter Lorimer also scored for the home side, with Francis Burns scoring Manchester United’s only goal.
Leeds ended the season as runners up in the league, finishing a point behind champions Derby County. Manchester United finished in eighth place.
