On This Day – 17th February
Graham Taylor’s England side beat San Marino at Wembley on this day in 1993. Captain David Platt scored four and even missed a penalty. Les Ferdinand and Carlton Palmer both scored their first goals for their country in one of the most one-sided matches of Taylor’s reign.
England started slowly and were only 2-0 up at the break after Platt had scored a double. The players were booed off, presumably because the 51,184 at the game had expected a huge scoreline.
Platt completed his hat-trick before Carlton Palmer became an unlikely scorer. The England captain then added his fourth before Les Ferdinand scored the sixth and final goal of the game.
John Barnes was given a torrid time by a large majority of the Wembley crowd. Every time he touched the ball, a cacophony of boos and jeers echoed around the national stadium.
England’s former World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore was in the Wembley crowd that night, commentating for Capital Radio. He had announced the day before that he was suffering from cancer. He died just a week later, six weeks before his 52nd birthday.
