Aston Villa hit seven past Wimbledon at Villa Park on this day in 1995. Villa’s new signing Tommy Johnson scored a hat-trick to register his first goals for the club after joining from Derby County.
The visitors took the lead after 11 minutes thanks to a powerful half-volley from Warren Barton. That was as good as it got for Wimbledon who from then on suffered a torrid afternoon.
It took Aston Villa less than a minute to find an equaliser, with defender Alan Reeves diverting a cross from Dean Saunders into his own net.
Ten minutes later, Johnson scored his first goal in Villa colours with a bullet header at the near post. He added his second four minutes later after some awful defending.
Johnson completed his hat-trick in the 38th minute, stabbing the ball into the back of the net from less than a yard out from a corner.
Villa lead 4-1 at the break but showed no sign of letting up in the second half. Dean Saunders thumped in a powerful effort from 30 yards three minutes after the restart before scoring his second from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded after Wimbledon goalkeeper Hans Segers brought down Villa midfielder Ian Taylor in the box.
Dwight Yorke completed a miserable afternoon for Wimbledon on the 83rd minute, firing in a shot from close range after sending Segers to the floor with an impressive dummy.
Villa’s victory was the joint-record Premier League win at the time, but the record would only stand for a few weeks later when Manchester United put nine past Ipswich Town three weeks later.
