On This Day – 10th February

Leeds United narrowly avoided a huge FA Cup upset on this day in 1975, winning 1-0 in an FA Cup replay against non-league Wimbledon.
The first match between the two at Elland Rod ended in a goalless draw, with Wimbledon goalkeeper Dickie Guy saving a penalty from Leeds hardman Peter Lorimer.

Interest was huge in the replay and due to Wimbledon’s Plough Lane being too small, the replay was moved to Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park. 45,071 fans crammed into Palace’s home to watch the First Division side come away with a 1-0 win.

In the previous round, Wimbledon had beaten First Division Burnley to set up the tie with Leeds. It was the club’s most memorable FA Cup run, but that became a distant memory when they defied the odds to win the competition in 1988.

Selhurst Park later became Wimbledon’s permanent residence in 1991 when they were a First Division club.
