On This Day – 25th January

Bristol City, clad in purple shirts and lime green shorts, beat Liverpool on this day in 1994 to complete an FA Cup giantkilling.

City wore their now iconic away kit for their replay away at Anfield after a 2-2 draw in the first game at Ashton Gate. There was real pressure on Liverpool’s manager Graeme Sounness, who despite winning the FA Cup in his first full season in charge, hadn’t delivered the goods for the club that he had done so well for as a player.

Sounness fielded a very strong line-up and the home fans were stunned into silence in the 66th minute when Brian Tinnion fired in from the edge of the box in front of The Kop. It proved to be the last FA Cup match played in front of the old terrace, as it was demolished at the end of the season.

The Liverpool board had enough and Sounness was fired shortly after. Roy Evans took over and managed the club for five years.
