On This Day – 1st January
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s year started badly on this day back in 2015. His Arsenal side lost 2-0 and he was at fault for both Southampton’s goals and picked up a £20,000 fine!
Sadio Mane opened the scoring after 34 minutes. The Senegalese forward chased after a long ball down the right wing and managed to outmuscle Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.
Szczesny came rushing out of his goal to try and get to the ball but Mane got to the ball first. The goalkeeper started to run back to his goal but Mane chipped it over him and past Per Mertesacker who ran back to cover for Szczesny.
Another moment of sloppy Arsenal defending gifted Southampton their second goal of the game. Matthieu Debuchy failed to clear a cross from the right wing, Szczesny tried to clear the ball from goal but it went straight to Dusan Tadic who found the back of the net.
The Polish international also received a £20,000 fine for being caught smoking in the showers by his manager Arsene Wenger!
