On This Day – 18th January
A run-of-the-mill away match against West Bromwich Albion on 18th January 1964 was a monumental match in Manchester United history.
It was the first time that George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton all played alongside one another in a competitive match. The three became known as ‘The Holy Trinity’ and their attacking prowess helped to guide Manchester United to their first European Cup in 1968.
The Holy Trinity lasted nine years before Denis Law and Bobby Charlton left Old Trafford in 1973, with Best officially leaving the club a year later. His last match at the club was on 1st January 1974 in a 3-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers but he had spent most of the 1972/73 season away from the club.
In the 4-1 away win over West Bromwich Albion back in 1964, United fans were given a sign of things to come as Law scored twice, with Best and Charlton adding the other two goals!
