On This Day – 11th January
David Beckham announced on this day back in 2007 that he would be leaving the mighty Real Madrid to joining MLS side LA Galaxy.
It seemed to be a real backward step for Beckham’s football career, leaving ‘The Galacticos’ for a league that was deemed a bit of a laughing stock.
The Americans were never known for their love of football – or ‘soccer’ as they still insist on calling it – preferring gridiron, basketball, baseball and ice hockey.
Real Madrid’s squad was littered with stars, with names such as Iker Casillas, Roberto Carlos, Raul, Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy. The LA Galaxy squad of 2006/07 had only two big names, Landon Donovan and former Portugal defender Abel Xavier!
When Beckham’s earnings were revealed, the real reason behind his move to the States suddenly seemed to make sense. He had supposedly signed a five year contract worth a staggering $250 million!
