Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.25

This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ is something of a classic. It was shown repeatedly on Sky’s Soccer AM in the weeks and months after it was scored and was the butt of many a joke.

Bury’s Chris Brass was the unfortunate victim of bad luck when he somehow contrived to kick the ball in his face when attempting to clear a cross away to Darlington in April 2006. It was the opening goal of the match, but Brass’s team ended up winning the game 3-2. The win did little to hide the embarrassment that the Bury defender would endure for years to come!

In the 8th minute of the match, a Darlington midfielder hit a high looping ball into the Bury penalty area. The visitors were playing with a high defensive line to try and play any Darlington forwards offside. Brass ran in to clear the ball and with no one near him, he hooked the ball away. It flew back, hit him square in the face before flying past Kasper Schmeichel in the Bury goal!

The game was played at Darlington’s new 25,000 seater stadium. Luckily for Brass, there were only 3,739 fans in the ground to witness his moment of shame. It must surely have compounded his misery to embarrass himself like he did in front of a capacity crowd!
