On This Day – 6th December
Kevin Keegan made his first appearance back at Anfield on this day in 1977, playing for his Hamburg side in the second leg of the European Super Cup.
Hamburg were visiting Merseyside after the two sides had played out a 1-1 draw in West Germany. The Germans had won the European Cup Winners Cup the previous season, defeating Anderlecht 2-0 in the Final.
Liverpool had qualified for the Super Cup after beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 in the European Cup Final. It was the first time in their history that they had won the biggest trophy in European football.
Kevin Keegan had left Liverpool six months before. The transfer deal almost doubled the German record. Sadly for him, his new side were hammered 6-0 by a rampant Liverpool.
Phil Thompson opened the scoring after 21 minutes, hooking a shot in from close range from a corner. Terry McDermott went on and scored a hat-trick, scoring in the 40th, 55th and 56th minute to claim the match ball. David Fairclough and Kenny Dalglish – the man brought in to replace Kevin Keegan – completed the rout in the final ten minutes.
Keegan would go on to win the Ballon D’Or in 1978 and 79, becoming the first Englishman to win the honour since Bobby Charlton in 1966.
