On This Day – 4th December
On this day in 1965, Tottenham Hotspur’s Frank Saul was sent off in a 1-1 draw away to Burnley. This may seem a bit of an odd thing to be writing an article about, but there is a reason why I’m writing about it
Saul became the first Tottenham player to get sent off in a league match for 37 years! The last Spurs player to get his marching orders was Cecil Boyton, in an away game at Stoke City on 17th April 1928!
In the 28 seasons since the Premier League began in August 1992, Tottenham have had 67 players red-carded. I’d imagine that the challenges that were made by Tottenham players between 1928 and 1965 would definitely have been given red cards today!
