On This Day – 15th December
Former England and Manchester City winger Mike Summerbee was born on this day in 1942. He was part of the successful City side that won four trophies in four seasons in the late 1960’s and early 70’s.
Summerbee began his career at Swindon Town, where he made his debut when he was only 16 years old. He was an established member of the first team when the club won promotion from the Third to the Second Division in 1962/63.
After six seasons at Swindon, he left to join Manchester City for £35,000 in 1965. City won promotion to the First Division in his first season at the club. Whilst at Maine Road, he was part of the hugely successful side that included Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Neil Young.
Two seasons after promotion, the club won the First Division title and the FA Cup the season after that. In the 1969/70 season, they lifted both the European Cup Winners Cup and League Cup.
Summerbee spent ten seasons at Maine Road and won eight England caps, scoring once against Switzerland at Wembley in 1971.
He left Manchester City in 1975 to join Burnley, and later Blackpool before ending his career in the Fourth Division with Stockport County.
Mike’s son Nicky was also a professional footballer and followed in his footsteps by starting his career at Swindon Town before moving to Manchester City! He played for another eight different clubs before retiring in 2006.
