Heroes & Villains – Oldham Athletic

Hero – Joe Royle
Joe Royle spent 12 years in charge at Boundary Park and oversaw the most successful period in the club’s history.
The former Everton striker took charge at Boundary Park in 1982 and guided the club to the Second Division title in 1990/91. They would spend three years in the top flight before being relegated in 1993/94.

Oldham did well in cup competitions under Royle as well; reaching the League Cup Final in 1989/90 and FA Cup Semi Final the same season. Four years later they would reach the Semi Final again, where the club’s ‘Villain’ stepped in to ruin the club’s big day out…

Villain – Mark Hughes
Sorry Latics fans but this goal had to be mentioned!
This was the goal that Mark Hughes scored for Manchester United in the last minute of Extra Time in the 1993/94 FA Cup Semi Final at Wembley.
Oldham went on to get relegated that season and have yet to return to the top flight. Manchester United went on to win the League and Cup Double.
