Bobby Robson made his debut for England on this day back in 1957, scoring twice in a 4-0 win over France at Wembley. Incredibly, Robson said that he only found out that he was going to play in the game by reading about it in a newspaper!
The two goals Robson scored were the first of four that he would score in 20 appearances for his country between 1957 and 1962. He would go on and famously become the England manager and guided them to the World Cup Semi Final in 1990.
Manchester United’s Tommy Taylor scored the other two in the comfortable victory at Wembley. He was joined by his United team mates Duncan Edwards and Roger Byrne in the England starting eleven. Tragically, all three would perish in the Munich Disaster less than three months later.
Despite scoring twice against France, Robson was dropped in the next England game, a 4-0 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park. He was replaced by Bobby Charlton, who was making his first appearance in an England shirt.
