A blog about all things football

On This Day – 26th November

The Football Association decided at the start of the 1991/92 season that a penalty shootout at the end of the first replay should settle ties. It was on this day in 1991 that the first penalty shootout in an FA Cup match was played.

For many years, some ties had to go through several replays before the tie was finally won. A good example of this was the 1980 FA Cup Semi Final between Arsenal and Liverpool, which was finally decided after four matches between the two clubs!

The two clubs involved in this historic match were Rotherham United and Scunthorpe United. After a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park, the replay at Millmoor ended 3-3 after extra time. Rotherham United won the shootout 7-6 in front of their home fans.
