On This Day – 25th November
Peterborough United’s Tony Philliskirk scored five goals in a 9-1 win over Kingstonian in the FA Cup on this day back in 1992. It was the biggest win in The Posh’s history and also the most goals scored by a Peterborough player in one match.
Philliskirk’s joy was short-lived however as the game was declared void after Kingstonian’s goalkeeper Adrian Blake was hit on the head by a coin thrown by a fan in the crowd behind his goal.
Peterborough were 3-0 up at the time and Blake was unable to continue due to the head injury. Kingstonian didn’t have a substitute goalkeeper so an outfielder had to go in goal in Blake’s place.
The 9-1 game was expunged from the record books and replayed behind closed doors. Peterborough also won this game, but this time it was by a solitary goal. They went out in the next round after losing 3-2 away to Plymouth Argyle.
