On this day in 1971, Bournemouth’s Ted MacDougall made national news for scoring nine goals in one match. It remains the record amount of goals scored by one player in the proper rounds of the FA Cup.
Third Division Bournemouth hosted non-league Margate in the FA Cup First Round at Dean Court. Any chance of a cup upset soon disappeared as MacDougall scored five first half goals!
Everything the Scottish striker touched seemed to hit the back of the net. He added four more goals in the second half. Micky Cave and future Bournemouth manager Mel Machin added the other goals to compound the non-league side’s misery.
MacDougall scored an impressive 126 goals in just 165 matches for The Cherries between 1969 and 1972. Manchester United came in and signed him in September 1972 for a fee of £200,000.
Despite scoring on his debut against Birmingham City and netting five goals in 18 games for United, he was sold to West Ham United in March 1973.
He returned to Bournemouth in 1978 via Norwich City and Southampton. Later on in his career MacDougall played in the North American Soccer League for The Detroit Express.
Ted MacDougall had a stand named after him at Dean Court in July 2013 and the picture at the top of this article is of him at the unveiling.
