On This Day – 18th November
Nottingham Forest’s 25 match unbeaten run in the Premier League was ended was a 7-0 hammering by reigning champions Blackburn Rovers on this day back in 1995.
Their impressive run began on 25th February and they went the last thirteen games of the 1994/95 season undefeated.
Despite selling star striker Stan Collymore in the close season to Liverpool, Forest’s run continued, winning six and drawing six of their first twelve games.
On paper, their next game at Blackburn Rovers on 18th November didn’t look to threaten their unbeaten run. Rovers had already lost seven league matches and won only four. They would definitely be handing back the Premier League trophy back before the season was out.
Alan Shearer opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a low shot across Mark Crossley into the far corner of the net. Lars Bohinen added a second eight minutes later, a couple of months after leaving Forest for Blackburn. The ome side lead 2-0 at the break.
Shearer scored in the 57th with a bullet header and completed his hat-trick on 68 minutes with a low free-kick. Crossley should have done a lot better with the free-kick and would have taken the blame for the goal.
Bohinen hammered in his second and Rovers’ fifth on 76 minutes before Mike Newell and Graeme Le Saux scored in the final ten minutes to give Forest a real day to forget.
Le Saux’s goal was the pick of the bunch as he hammered in a rasping shot from distance after a corner wasn’t cleared properly. It was the perfect way to end the scoring in a very one-sided match.
