On This Day – 12th November
On this day in 2005, Michael Owen scored two goals in the last few minutes to give England a 3-2 win over Argentina.
The match between the two rivals was played in the neutral venue of the Stade de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland. It provided England fans with a real sense of hope ahead of the World Cup that was to be held in Germany seven months later.
Hernan Crespo gave Argentina the lead on 35 minutes with a tap-in from close range. Wayne Rooney fired in an equaliser for England four minutes later to make the score 1-1 at the break.
Walter Samuel nodded from a Juan Roman Riquelme free kick eight minutes after the interval to give Argentina the lead for the second time in the match.
With only four minutes to go, Michael Owen scored his 34th goal for England with a far post header before nodding in at the near post in the second minute of injury time.
England went on to reach the Quarter Final of the World Cup in Germany the following year before losing to Portugal in a penalty shootout. Argentina reached the same stage and also lost on penalties to hosts Germany in Berlin.
