Heroes – The Team of 1964/65
The 1964/65 season was a remarkable one for Northampton Town as the club finished runners up in the old Second Division. This meant that the club were promoted to the First Division for the first time in their history.
Two defeats in Northampton’s first five games were followed by an eighteen match unbeaten run. This came to an end with a 5-0 defeat away to eventual champions Newcastle United.
Northampton would only lose three matches after that drubbing at St James’s Park and also went the whole season unbeaten at home!
The following season, Northampton finished 21st and were relegated with Blackburn Rovers who finished well adrift at the bottom.
