Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.17
This week’s own goal comes from Liverpool’s Ronnie Whelan against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 1989/90 season.
Seven years earlier, Whelan curled in the winner against Manchester United for Liverpool in the League Cup Final at Wembley but in my opinion, this own goal was much more memorable!
Liverpool were leading 2-0 with eight minutes to go until Whelan decided that he would make the game a little more interesting!
United’s Steve Bruce had the ball played back to him as he stood in space just inside the Liverpool half. He hit a hopeful ball forward that was headed away by Barry Venison right into the path of Ronnie Whelan.
The Republic of Ireland international ran towards the ball and somehow got right underneath it and scooped the ball high towards his own goal. Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar was several yards off his line and was caught completely off-guard as Whelan’s powerful backpass flew over his head and into the back of the net!
It was quite an extraordinary own goal and caught everyone unawares! The commentary from Brian Moore in the ITV coverage summed it up when he gasped with a “WOAH!” as the ball sailed under the crossbar and into the net, much to the delight of the Manchester United fans.
Despite Whelan’s spectacular own goal, Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1 and went on to win the League Championship. It remained their last league title in 30 years until Jurgen Klopp lead the club to the title last season.
