In this new series, I look back on moments when players or teams break records, some good, others less so! First in this series is the match when Thierry Henry broke the Arsenal goalscoring record…
Thierry Henry finally became Arsenal’s record goalscorer on 18th October 2005, scoring both of Arsenal’s goals in a 2-0 win away to Sparta Prague in the Champions League.
Henry opened the scoring after 21 minutes, using the outside of his boot from 20 yards to equal Ian Wright’s record. He had only been on the field for six minutes after replacing the injured Jose Antonio Reyes. He had missed the previous seven matches through injury, so it was a fine return to the first team!
The Frenchman then beat Wright’s previous record of 185 goals in the 74th minute with a calm finish under pressure from two Sparta defenders. It had taken him six years to write his name in Arsenal’s history books following an £11 million move from Juventus.
Henry stayed at Arsenal until 2007 when he left to join Barcelona. He would return to Arsenal in January 2012 on a loan deal and scored within a couple of minutes of his first game back at the club where he made his name. In all, Henry scored 228 goals in just 376 for Arsenal, a record that is unlikely to be broken.
