On This Day – 7th October
The last match ever played at the old Wembley Stadium was played on this day back in 2000.
England faced Germany in a World Cup qualifier in the pouring rain on a miserable Saturday afternoon. With the fans in the stadium already in a sombre mood, England’s defeat was as damp as the weather and lost 1-0.
Germany’s Dietmar Hamann hit a low free-kick into the bottom corner from a full 35 yards out, catching England goalkeeper David Seaman off-guard with a quickly taken free kick.
Seaman was organising England’s defence out and Hamann had already been given the signal to take the free-kick. With no defensive wall in front of him, Hamann walloped the ball as hard as he could and scored the only goal of the game with 13 minutes gone.
With England failing to trouble the German goal for the rest of the game, the visitors took the glory of winning the last game at the home of English football.
After the match, England manager Kevin Keegan gave a frank interview in the tunnel for Sky Sports, explaining that it was his last match in charge of the national team. He had resigned in the toilets of the home dressing room after the game and was very upset about the manner of the defeat.
