On This Day – 30th September
Former Celtic and Scotland legend Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone was born on this day back in 1944.
Johnstone played 529 games for The Hoops and scored an 135 goals for the club. He was part of the ‘Lisbon Lions’, the 1967 European Cup winning side who became the first British club to lift the trophy.
Making his debut for Celtic at the age of 18, he soon became renowned for his pace and dribbling skills. Over the course of his thirteen years at Parkhead, the enigmatic winger won nine league titles, four Scottish Cups, five League Cups and a European Cup. He also finished third in the Ballon d’Or in 1967 behind Florian Albert and Bobby Charlton.
Johnstone won 23 caps for Scotland and scored four goals. He was part of the Scotland squad that went to the World Cup in 1974 but didn’t play in any of the three matches that they played in West Germany.
