On This Day – 2nd October
Seven players made their England debut on this day back in 1954 in a 2-0 victory over Ireland in the Home Championship.
The game was played at Windsor Park, with goals from Fulham’s Johnny Haynes and Manchester City’s Don Revie. Both goals were scored in the final fifteen minutes of the game, with Haynes netting after 75 minutes and Revie securing the win three minutes later.
Haynes would go on to become one of Fulham’s greatest players, with the famous main stand at Craven Cottage being renamed ‘The Johnny Haynes Stand’ in his honour, shortly after his death in October 2005. A statue of Haynes was unveiled outside the ground three years later.
The Fulham legend played 594 games for the club and scored 147 goals. He also made 56 appearances for England and scored 18 goals. 22 of the games that he represented his country were as captain.
Revie is best remembered for his time as a manager despite winning six caps for England and winning the 1956 FA Cup as a player. He managed Leeds United in their successful time of the early 1970’s and went on to become England manager between 1974 and 1977.
Like Haynes, Revie also has a statue made in his honour and a stand named after him. The statue of Revie stands outside Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.
