On This Day – 27th October
It was on this day in 1957 that Glenn Hoddle was born. The former England manager is now 63 years old and that must make some of the readers on here feel rather old!
He made his debut for Tottenham at the age of 17, scoring in his next game six months later. His first international cap came three years later four weeks after his 20th birthday and he would go on to win 53 caps for England, scoring 8 goals.
In the 1979/80 season, Hoddle scored 19 goals in 41 league appearances and won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. The following season he lifted the FA Cup after scoring in both the Final and the replay.
Another FA Cup followed in the 1981/82 season and a UEFA Cup win came two years later in the 1984.
Hoddle joined French side Monaco in the summer of 1987. Arsene Wenger signed Hoddle at Monaco and the club stormed to the French league title in Hoddle’s first season at the club. A knee injury ended his time in France and he left to join Chelsea on a non-contract basis.
After not playing a single game in his time at Stamford Bridge, Hoddle was offered the Player-Manager role at Swindon Town and he decided to join the Second Division club.
In the next two seasons, Hoddle would make 74 appearances for The Robins and helped to guide them to the Premier League via the play-offs in his second season at the club.
Chelsea came back for Hoddle and he decided to go back to Stamford Bridge where his new side reached the FA Cup Final in his first full season in charge. In the next two seasons, Chelsea reached the semi final of the Cup Winners Cup in 1994/95 and the FA Cup the year after.
Hoddle was offered the England job a few weeks before Euro 96 and took the job after the Championship was completed. He guided England to the 1998 World Cup where they were knocked out in the Second Round by Argentina.
Less than a year later though, Hoddle left the job after making inappropriate remarks in the press. I won’t go into specifics as it’s not the place to do so.
He has since returned to football management with spells at Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.
