On This Day – 19th October
Norwich City recorded their most famous win in their history on this day back in 1993, beating the mighty Bayern Munich 2-1 in the UEFA Cup.
Jeremy Goss scored a fantastic scissor kick volley from the edge of the penalty area to open the scoring on 13 minutes. This goal featured in the ‘Football’s Greatest Goals’ series and you can read about it here.
Mark Bowen then added a second for the visitors on the half hour mark. The Welsh left back ghosted in at the far post as Lee Crooks’s free kick flew over the heads of everyone in the box. He caught the ball perfectly and his header flew into the far corner of the net.
Christian Nerlinger headed in at the far post to give Bayern a lifeline but Norwich held on for a famous win. The second leg ended in a draw, meaning the Canaries progressed to the Third Round of the UEFA Cup.
Sadly for Niorwich, they were knocked out in the following round by a Dennis Bergkamp-inspired Inter Milan, but the memories of the famous night in Munich live long in the memory.
