On This Day – 15th October
Any football fan worth their salt will be able to tell you their club’s record win. Preston North End fans are given no excuse as their highest win is also the biggest home win and most goals scored in a game in English football history.
It was on this day that Preston North End defeated the hapless Hyde United 26-0 in the First Round of the FA Cup. Preston had home advantage but I doubt that would have made much difference and raced into a twelve goal lead at the break.
Any hope from Hyde that there would be a let-up was short-lived as they shipped in another fourteen goals in the second half! Nine of Preston’s ten outfielders got their name on the scoresheet in surely the most one-sided match ever to be played in the history of the world’s oldest cup competition.
Preston went all the way to the Final, scoring a total of 56 goals in eight games. before losing the final 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion.
