On This Day – 13th October
Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown on this day back in in 1979.
Brown also played for Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Kerala Blasters of the Indian Premier League in a career that lasted 22 years.
In his thirteen years at Manchester United, Brown won five Premier League titles, and the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup twice.
The centre back made his Manchester United debut against Leeds United on 4th May 1998, coming on as a substitute.
Brown was out for most of the 1999/00 season but when returning to full fitness, Sir Alex Ferguson gave him the ultimate confidence boost, claiming that he was the most talented defender in the United squad.
Injuries would hamper Brown’s progress and he dropped down the pecking order when Nemanja Vidic was signed in January 2006. The Serb forged a great partnership with Rio Ferdinand, leaving Brown out of the side.
Brown left Manchester United in 2011, having made 362 appearances for United and scoring five goals.
He moved to Sunderland and spent five seasons at the Stadium of Light, making 87 appearances. He scored an own goal against Manchester United in his first season after leaving Old Trafford!
A short spell at Blackburn Rovers followed before Brown moved to India where he played 15 games for Kerala Blasters.
Brown won 23 international caps for England, scoring one goal in a friendly against Czech Republic in August 2008.
