On This Day – 29th September
Chelsea recorded their biggest ever win on this day back in 1971, beating Jeunesse Hautcharage of Luxembourg 13-0 at Stamford Bridge.
The game took place in the First Round of the European Cup Winners Cup, with Chelsea entering the competition as holders after beating real Madrid in the final in the May of that year.
The Blues won the first leg 8-0 in the first leg in Luxembourg and there was no let up for their opponents in the second leg with Peter Osgood helping himself to five goals. Tommy Baldwin also helped himself to a hat-trick and John Hollins, Alan Hudson, Peter Houseman, Ron Harris and Dave Webb all chipped in with a goal apiece.
The huge scoreline only tells half the story as the minnows from Luxembourg almost resembled a pub team. They had four brothers in their team, a striker who only had one arm, a midfielder who wore glasses when playing and two players over the age of 40! Their substitute that night at Stamford Bridge was only 15 years old.
Chelsea were knocked out in the next round Swedish side Atvidaberg on away goals.
