Heroes & Villains – Manchester City
Hero – Colin Bell
The name Colin Bell is known by every Manchester City fan regardless of how old they are. Supporters who may not even been around when Bell played would have heard about him from other fans who saw the great man in action.
One of the stands at City’s Etihad Stadium has been named after him and he was also known as the ‘King of the Kippax’ when City played at their former home Maine Road.
The former City man is regarded by many as one of England’s finest ever midfielders. He made 48 appearances for England between 1968 and 1975, scoring nine goals.
He made 501 appearances for Manchester City after joining from local side Bury in 1966. He would stay at the club for another thirteen years before ending his career in America, spending a year at San Jose Earthquakes.
Over the course of the 13 years at Maine Road, Bell scored an impressive 153 goals. He is the fourth highest goalscorer in the club’s history.
Villains – Jo
Brazilian striker Jo was Mark Hughes’ first signing when the Welshman became Manchester City manager in the summer of 2008.
£18 million was spent on bringing Jo to the club from CSKA Moscow where he had scored 44 goals in 77 games.
During the three years at the club, the Brazilian scored only six times in 42 games for City. He went out on loan to Everton twice and also to Turkish side Galatasaray. His first spell at Everton was probably his most successful time in England and is definitely a players that City fans would choose to forget!
