Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.12
As an Arsenal fan, this week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ is bloody hilarious! It came from current Real Madrid star Gareth Bale from his Tottenham Hotspur days (now you see why I think it’s so funny?).
Bale’s Tottenham were hosting Liverpool at White Hart Lane on 28th November 2012 and were already 2-0 up with 27 minutes gone. Gareth Bale had scored Tottenham’s second goal so suffered the ignominity of scoring at both ends in one game.
Liverpool had a corner on the right that was whipped in by Jonjo Shelvey. Danish central defender Daniel Agger jumped the highest and headed the ball on towards the far post.
Steven Gerrard stood just outside the six yard box and forced a header down across goal. Aaron Lennon, who scored Tottenham’s first goal, was stood on the goal line and thumped the ball away from danger.
Sadly for Tottenham, Gareth Bale was standing a few feet away from Lennon and the ball struck him square in the face and flew into the back of the net.
Bale hit the floor and was helped to his feet by his goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. He looked a bit shaken up and as if he didn’t fully realise quite what had happened!
Luckily for Bale and Tottenham, the home side hung on and won the game 2-1 but it still goes down as one of the funniest own goals in the Premier League’s 28 year history!
