Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.11
This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal of All-Time’ comes from a very unusual source but when you see the own goal in the video below, you will agree that it was worth it!
I saw the own goal on YouTube courtesy of The Guardian and it has to be one of the greatest ever seen. It is also undoubtedly the most obscure match that will ever feature on this blog.
The match featured is between Pully Football and FC Renens, both of whom play in the sixth tier of Swiss football. (Now you know why I said it was obscure!) The two teams were playing in a Vaudoise Cup match in the 2016/17 season and FC Renens were 2-1 up.
A Renens midfielder stood on the centre spot sprayed a hopeful ball down the right wing for his team mate to chase. The winger got to the ball and was put under immediate pressure so hit a cross into the box.
Luckily for Pully Football, their defender Adrien Gulfo was there to cut out the danger, or so they thought! Gulfo sliced at the ball sending it up in the air but quickly chased after it to get rid of the danger.
With no Renens players within 10 yards of him, Gulfo deemed it necessary to try and clear the ball away with an overhead kick. It was definitely not needed as he had plenty of time to take the ball down and find a better way of getting the ball out of his penalty area.
Sadly for Gulfo, he completely misjudged where to kick the ball and succeeded in scissor-kicking the ball over his goalkeeper’s head and into the far corner! The goalkeeper had no chance to react as he was stood six yards away from him right on the near post.
Gulfo has since become an internet sensation and he would never have appeared on this blog had it not been for the own goal going viral. Just for the record, Pully came back and the game finished 3-3 and winning 7-6 on penalties.
