On This Day – 9th August
My club Aldershot Town made an emotional return to the Football League on this day back in 2008, sixteen years after the original club went out of business.
A 1-0 win at Accrington Stanley thanks to a free-kick by Scott Donnelly three minutes before the interval got Aldershot’s season off to winning ways.
Original club Aldershot went out of business in 1992 and played their last game away to Cardiff City on 25th March. They lost 2-0 to Cardiff but as their 1991/92 season ended early, all of their results were expunged from the records.
Aldershot Town were a new club set up by fans in the summer of that year and were accepted in the Isthmian League Division Three (the fifth tier of the non-league pyramid at the time).
Consecutive promotions were secured in their first two seasons before further promotions in 1997/98 and 2003/04 took them up to the Conference.
The 2007/08 season saw The Shots win the Conference title with a record 101 points, 15 points ahead of Cambridge United in second place.
Aldershot did well in their first season back in the Football League, finished the season in 15th place. They started well but began to falter in the New Year, winning only five of their last 25 games.
The club would stay in the Football League for five years before being relegated back in 2013. They have been in the Conference ever since.
