On This Day – 2nd August
Arsenal signed Davor Suker from Real Madrid on this day back in 1999. He was signed as a replacement for the young French striker Nicolas Anelka who had joined Real just a few weeks before.
Big things were expected from Suker, who had won the World Cup Golden Boot the previous summer. Sadly, for the Croat, things didn’t quite kick off in the way he hoped and only managed to score eleven times in 39 games.
After a year at Highbury, Suker moved across London to join West Ham United where he spent a season before ending his career in Germany with 1860 Munich.
