The 1982 World Cup Semi Final between West Germany and France took place in Seville on this day back in 1982.
As soon as this match is mentioned, images are conjured up of the incident involving France’s Patrick Battiston and West German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher. It featured in the 22nd ‘Iconic Moment in Football’ and you can read about it here.

West Germany won 5-4 on penalties after the match finished 3-3 after extra time. West Germany took the lead after 17 minutes with Pierre Littbarski side-footing home from outside the box.
Michel Platini sent Schumacher the wrong way with a well-placed penalty ten minutes later and the game went to Extra Time.

France scored twice in the opening eight minutes to go 3-1 up thanks to centre back Marius Tresor and midfielder Alain Giresse.
The West German side weren’t going to give up though and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored four minutes later. Klaus Fischer levelled the scores three minutes after the start of the second period of Extra Time and the game was decided by a penalty shootout.

West Germany’s Uli Stielike missed the first penalty of the shootout but it was their only miss. Didier Six and Maxime Bossis missed the crucial penalties for France but the Germans went through to the Final.
