When Bill Shankly resigned from the manager’s job at Liverpool back in 1974, it sent shockwaves through the footballing world. You can read more about it here.
Luckily for Liverpool, they had a ready-made replacement in Bob Paisley, thereby starting the famous Anfield Boot Room series of coaching staff replacing managers.
Paisley famously never wanted the job and kept trying to convince his predecessor to stay. Try as he might Shankly wouldn’t budge and Liverpool would go on to have the most successful period of their history.
With Bob Paisley at the helm, Liverpool won 22 trophies over a nine year period, which included six league titles, three consecutive League Cups and three European Cups.
The popular manager decided that he would retire at the end of the 1982/83 season, handing the reins over to Joe Fagan. This marked the end of a 44 year spell at Anfield in various capacities, having joined the club as a player from Bishop’s Auckland in 1939.
