On This Day – 18th July

Liverpool completed a signing from Inter Milan on this day back in 1997 that kicked up a real fuss on the red half of Manchester.
Roy Evans kick up quite a stir when he unveiled former Manchester United star Paul Ince as his latest signing at Anfield.

Ince was a real bargain at £4.2 million and was a sign of intent from Evans that he wanted to bring back the good times to Liverpool. The Liverpool manager brought in three ourtfield players over the summer of 1997, signing Oyvind Leonharsen from Wimbledon, youngster Danny Murphy from Crewe Alexandra and experienced striker Karl-Heinz Riedle from Borussia Dortmund. Brad Friedel was signed as a back-up to David James.

It was the second time that Paul Ince caused controversy by moving to a new club. West Ham United fans never forgave him for leaving their club for Manchester United in the summer of 1989. Now the roles were reversed and United fans hated him for joining Liverpool, one of their main rivals!
