On This Day – 30th June

Brazil won the fifth World Cup on this day back in 2002, beating Germany 2-0 in Yokohama, Japan.
Ronaldo scored twice for Brazil, opening the scoring after 67 minutes before adding a second with 11 minutes of the game remaining.

Ronaldo’s first came after he chased in a shot from Rivaldo at the edge of the box. Oliver Kahn, the Germany goalkeeper, uncharacteristically fumbled a straightforward save and Ronaldo tapped the ball past him into the net.

His second was a composed, placed finish across Kahn into the far corner of the net after 79 minutes.
Kleberson took the ball down the right wing and laid the ball off to Rivaldo at the edge of the box. The Barcelona midfielder let the ball run behind him and it fell nicely to Ronaldo who secured the win for the Brazilians.

The win over Germany is Brazil’s last World Cup win to date. The trophy hasn’t left Europe since 2006 after Italy, Spain, Germany and most recently France have all lifted the famous gold trophy.
