Carlos Caszely scored an impressive 29 goals in 48 appearances for the Chilean national team, but on this day back in 1974, he made history for all of the wrong reasons.
It was on this day during the 1974 World Cup that Caszely became the first player to be shown a red card at a World Cup.
The red and yellow cards were first seen at Mexico ’70, but no one had been sent off in that competition.
Caszely was part of the Chile side that were playing hosts West Germany at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. He got shown a yellow card after 13 minutes.
A second yellow followed midway through the second half for a retaliatory foul on Berti Vogts, who seconds after had tackled Caszely.
The Chilean picked himself up and promptly hacked Vogts to the ground. Amazingly, he was only given a yellow card for the foul but as it was his second booking, the red quickly followed.
West Germany went on to win the tournament in front of their own fans. Chile went home at the group stages after finishing in third position.
