On This Day – 10th June
A funny incident took place in the World Cup match between holders Brazil and England on this day back in 1962.
A few minutes into the game, a black dog made its way on to the pitch and despite several players trying to grab it to take it off the pitch, it managed to evade capture.
That was until England’s Jimmy Greaves decided to try and help to get the game resumed. Greaves got down on all fours and the dog hesitantly moved closer to the England striker.
As the dog got within reach, Greaves grabbed it, picked it up and handed it to a policeman who had run on to the pitch to try and remove it. The England man said after the match that the dog had urinated on him!
Brazilian winger Garrincha later took such a liking to the dog that he asked to keep it as a pet! He would take it back home to Brazil after the Final.
England had finished second and qualified from Group 4 ahead of Argentina due to a better Goal Ratio. Brazil had topped Group 3 and beat England 3-1 in this Quarter Final in Santiago, thanks to two goals from Garrincha and a goal from Vava.
The Brazilians would go on and retain the Jules Rimet Trophy with a 3-1 win over Czechoslovakia in the Final.
