Football’s Greatest Hat-Tricks No.2
Robbie Fowler broke the record for the fastest Premier League hat-trick against Arsenal on 28th August 1994.
He managed to score three times in four minutes 33 seconds as Liverpool beat the European Cup Winners Cup holders 3-0.
Fowler’s first came after 26 minutes. Ian Rush and Arsenal’s Martin Keown went up for a header, neither got a proper connection on the ball and the ball fell nicely for Robbie Fowler. The young Liverpool striker drove the ball past an on-rushing David Seaman from eight yards.
Two minutes and 44 seconds was all it took for Fowler to find the net for a second time, slotting the ball across Seaman and in off the far post. His composed finish showed how quickly he had blossomed into a fine striker, having only made his first-team debut for the club in the previous season.
His hat-trick was complete less than two minutes later when he chased after a through-ball from John Barnes. Fowler’s initial shot was blocked by Seaman but the Liverpool striker chased after the ball and tapped in from a yard out.
Liverpool ended the season winning the Coca Cola Cup and Arsenal reached the European Cup Winners Cup Final, but lost to Real Zaragoza in injury time.
