Football’s Greatest Goals No.16
This week’s Greatest Goal comes from Tottenham’s Erik Edman, in a Premier League game at Anfield in April 2005.
It was the only goal that the Swedish left-back scored in his time at Spurs, but it was certainly a memorable one!
12 minutes into the game, Tottenham had a corner out on the right wing. A short corner was played by Andy Reid to Robbie Keane, who tried to whip in a cross.
A Liverpool defender came charging in and blocked Keane’s attempted cross, causing the ball to fly off away from goal and towards the centre circle.
Erik Edman was stood around 40 yards from goal and moved to pick up the loose ball. He controlled the ball with his left foot and had enough time to steady himself and take another touch. No Liverpool player was within 15 yards of the Swede and after a quickly look up, Edman hammered the ball at goal.
The ball swerved and dipped in the air and Jerzy Dudek in the Liverpool goal stood and watched the ball fly into the top corner of the net. It is a real indication of how hard Edman hit the ball that Dudek didn’t even have time to react and make an attempt to get near it.
The game finished 2-2 and Tottenham ended the season in ninth place in the Premier League. Liverpool finished fifth and won the Champions League, eating AC Milan on penalties.
After scoring such a great goal, you would have thought Tottenham would have kept hold of Edman. This wasn’t the case as they sold him four months later to French side Stade Rennais!
