On This Day – 7th May
Manchester City fans have always had a turbulent time. Life is never easy being a City fan although it has been much easier since they’ve had a billionaire take over the club!
Even then, City made life very difficult for their fans by winning the league title in the last few seconds of the 2011/12 season.
Back at the start of this millennium, Manchester City were in the secopnd tier of English football, having been promoted via the play-offs the previous season. Two stoppage-time goals at the end of the Final against Gillingham took the game to extra-time before City won promotion on penalty kicks.
They settled very quickly into the second tier and back-to-back promotions were confirmed on this day back in 2000.
A 4-1 win away to Blackburn Rovers was enough to send City up in the automatic promotion places, finishing two points clear of Ipswich Town in third place.
Fast forward twelve months to 7th May 2001 and City lost 2-1 at Ipswich Town. This defeat sent them straight back down to the First Division after a single season in the Premiership.
